James Cameron Makes History With Third $2 Billion Film

James Cameron has joined an exclusive group on Sunday, one that includes only himself – he is now the only director in history with three films that have surpassed the monumental milestone of $2 billion at the international box office.

His latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, crossed the line on Sunday, joining the ranks of his previous films Avatar ($2.9B) and Titanic ($2.1B).

Only three other films have ever passed $2 billion, all of which are Disney-owned: Avengers: Endgame (#2, $2.7B), Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (#4, $2.071B), and Avengers: Infinity War (#5, $2.052B). Avatar 2 is now the 6th highest-grossing film of all time.

Prior to this weekend’s achievement, Cameron shared the space with the Russo Brothers, who directed both Avengers films, but he has now surpassed them and is in a league of his own. It’s worth noting that The Way of Water has only been in theatres for a month, so it has reached this massive amount of ticket sales in record time, although the Russo‘s technically got there faster. It took ‘A2’ 37 days to cross the $2 billion finish line, while ‘Endgame’ managed it in an astounding 11 days.

It’s safe to say that Cameron‘s latest installment has become highly profitable and there will likely be more sequels. However, it’s worth noting that the film had a slow start when it opened on December 16th and there were doubts if it had the legs to go the distance.

In a time when box office numbers are not what they used to be, James Cameron seems to make consistent hit films. The film industry is calling for the director to get back on set as soon as possible.
